   Survey among Young Offenders

In October, 2014 the Prevention Center, Choice, in the frames of the substance abuse prevention training for inmates of Pryluky confinement facility for young offenders, conducted pre and post surveys among 20 inmates of 16-17 years old. The goals of the surveys were to evaluate training effectiveness as well to measure risk and protective factors. For the purpose a questionnaire containing 50 items was used.  Each question envisaged five potential answers that were accordingly estimated positively or negatively (it was known only to researcher).

The first two questions/items were:

  1. If I commit a crime I will not be detained;

  2. I do not pay attention at laws that do not let me do what I want.

The responses could be:

  • Its not true at all (+2);

  • Its not true (+1);

  • Its more true than untrue  (-1);

  • Its true (-2);

  • Its very true (-3).

The pre survey was conducted just before the SAP training and altogether for the first two questions gave (+15) and (-35) points for the group or the 20 respondents. The post survey was carried out right after the final tens session of the SAP Program, Choice-10 and gave (+27) and (-22) points for the same group of the 20 respondents. The results allow concluding that the Choice-10 has brought considerable changes into values of the inmates, thus decreased risk factors and promoted protection factors.

In 2014 the research (poster on your left) was presented at the Society for Prevention Research Conference in Washington, DC as well at NIDA International Forum in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
     In June 14-19, 2013 at the NIDA International Forum in San Diego was presented research "Development and evaluation of an evidence based substance abuse prevention program for adolescents in Ukraine".

RESULTS: At the post assessment, for those youth who participated in Choice, 6% reported having used tobacco and 10% alcohol during the past 30 days. For the control group, 11% reported having used tobacco and 18% alcohol.

CONCLUSION: These findings provide empirical support for the effectiveness of the Choice program in preventing substance use among 6th to 8th grade students. In the academic year 2011/2012 the program Choice and the second stage of the research will be conducted in five schools of the City of Chernihiv with involvement of 300 students.

Like during the 2012 NIDA Forum in Palm Springs I again met Italian researchers Catia and Claudia.

     In May 29-31, 2013 findings of the research "Studying and addressing risk and protective factors for alcohol and tobacco use by adolescents in the City of Chernihiv, Ukraine"  were presented at  the Conference of Society for Prevention Research in San Francisco.

Other findings will be used to improve the program and prepare for wider implementation and further study.

The Conference was precious with meeting such outstanding prevention professionals like David Hawkins and Richard Catalano. The SPR President Dr. Deborah Gorman-Smith generously shared her knowledge and supplied with valuable advice.
